"The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way." Psalm 25:9
"Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." 1 Peter 5:5
The Bible speaks plainly about us being meek. Humble. Not proud. It's way too easy to think that being modest means to simply dress modestly. There's more to it than that, though. Sure, dressing modestly is important, but it starts in the heart.
Modesty begins in the heart.
Think about it.. What causes us to not dress modestly? Pride, right? Thinking that I look good and wanting others to recognize. What makes us spend hours primping our hair, applying our makeup, and trying on dress after dress? Pride, right? Thinking that we look good and wanting others to see that.
Yep... the heart.
We need a modest heart.
God created each one of us in His image, so there's not a doubt in my mind that we are all beautiful, but we need to keep our mind focused on something other than how we look. Sure, take care of what God has given us, always maintain a clean image. Clean hair, clean clothes, but modestly truly is more than that.
Modesty is about keeping our thoughts modest. Certain television shows will prevent our mind from being modest. There are shows everywhere that portray scantily clad women. Books can describe situations that aren't modest, too. And don't even get me started on magazine covers!
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8
Modesty is about keeping our eyes focused on whatsoever things are true.
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." John 17:3
The only true God is where our thoughts should be. Spend time in prayer, maintain relationships that build up your relationship with your Heavenly Father.
Honest. Just. Pure. Lovely. Good report.
Ask yourself if that shirt keeps you honest... if it keeps the men around you honest.
Ask yourself if that book movie you want to see keeps you pure. Your thoughts pure. Your reputation pure.
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7
Resist the urge to allow yourself to be given into the temptation, do what you need to do to keep yourself modest- both in thought and dress.
Keep your eyes focused on God and let Him work in your heart.
